Fourth place worldwide in GDP, second place in Purchasing Power Parity, over 10% growth in 2009, investment over 40% of GDP; with 14 million autos sold in 2009 the largest market worldwide, almost 40 million tons import of waste paper in 2010. The most recent figures demonstrate the continued increasing trend of recent years.

Thereby China has begun to realise that at such a growth rate, sustainability regarding environmental issues must be taken into consideration. Energy from alternative sources, for example, wind power, is an increasingly more important topic.

This is also evident at the Expo in Shanghai which through its title: “Better City, Better Life” is focusing on environmental and energy topics.

Therefore an immense need for material exists. In practice regulations and methods for early integration of the examination of environmental assessment in the infrastructure and investment projects are currently in the process of being established.

The Free Trade Area (FTA) of January 2010 between ASEAN and China affects 1.9 billion people and is thereby the largest in the world. This leads to interesting connections to the South-East Asian region.
